Bridgerton, Contemporary Regency Dresses
Netflix Bridgerton X British Fashion Council X Shanti Bell, 2021
This project explores a reinterpretation of Regency-style garments with a contemporary twist. I was asked to design and make two dresses along with accessories, shoes, and mascarade-style masks for two of the main characters in the upcoming Netflix period drama, Bridgerton. The dresses were designed for Phoebe Dynevor and Claudia Jessie who played sisters within the series. The drama series heavily explored the themes of gossip and so I began my research by looking at how gossip would travel within those times - newspapers. I explored how newspapers were stored, stacked, and transported and took direct inspiration of how I could then drape and layer the dresses and fabric. Working with silk, chiffon I wanted to create sculptural gowns which had a contemporary presence and silhouette but echoed the past.
