It is a relationship, a bond unlike any other relationship that exists, there are preconceptions of what this relationship should be and look like, placed there by not only society and examples of before but by the father himself. This project is titled Now, I hear you which is a rich combination of sound, performance, sculpture and menswear. My concept derived from exploring father and son relationships which stemmed from looking at that dynamic within my own family between my father and brother. &nbsp; The project and these sculptures led me to explore the collaboration with three drummers who I worked closely with to create a sound experience that could sonically translate the felt emotions of a son. The work I created was made up of five human-sized sculptures in wood and metal and what I wanted to communicate was that the drummers were the sons who were in that moment playing their emotions and being heard. The sound arrangement which we worked on together was raw and authentic displaying of emotions. This project was received through me curating and putting together my first solo show which was held in 26 Leake Street in Waterloo and had an audience of 60+ people. It was a live sound multilayered experience which began with three skaters skating up and down the tunnel in sculptural garments which I designed and made which could inflate and transform due to the wind created when in motion. To the live drumming show featuring three drummers playing a composed piece on the sculptures. Lastly, having an open session where the audience could participate and play on the sculptures themselves. This project was a great reflection of the layered nature of my practice and offered a series of moments for connection, feeling alive, creative expression and freedom. <img width="6240" height="4160" Throughout this project myself and Goom had a constant dialogue in sharing ideas and expertise to create bespoke pieces which encapsulated the concept and essence behind her collection. Within this project I worked with a mixture of materials and techniques, such as, wood, metal, leather, hand carving, soldering, metal bending and manipulation to create authentic pieces. My intentions were to create jewellery and belt pieces which would not only work cohesively, but also stand out alongside the dynamic designs of Goom’s SS23 collection. It was a great project to further explore how my practice can overlap with other creative mediums. FeatureSystem Magazine X RCA X Shanti Bell, 2022&nbsp; A feature in System Magazine, Issue 19. This was a collaborative feature which included an interview and photoshoot in their print magazine and also a written interview and documentary style creative film published on the System Magazine website. This project was really great as both the photographer and film maker were interested in a collaborative approach to feature the selected artists of RCA. This entailed myself sharing my current work and thought process with them to create outcomes for the magazine which was reflective of my practice. The film interview is a great insight in capturing the important stage I was at where my personal show for my project ‘Now I hear you’ was only a few months away. I alongside six others were brought on the project to research, experiment, and produce ways that fashion and architecture can work together to tackle the issues surrounding climate change. We worked closely with a team of architects based in Argentina who had designed a house for the future in which we needed to offer suggestions of what the furniture within this house could be. The main feature of the house was that it had no floor and the ground was earth and soil. With the fashion industry being a large contributor to inflicting a negative impact on the planet it is important as new designers to search for solutions and ways to reuse the waste produced by the fashion industry. &nbsp; Within this project, I worked with a fellow RCA MA fashion student, Savvas Alexander, and together we explored two different outcomes. One is a hybrid wall chair, cushion, and physical support called PINCH. It was made by combining two disused t-shirts and stuffing them with shredding garments. We were interested in the work we were created to visually hint at the human and how if the planet continues to be destroyed what would the future of living look like, and where would we find comfort, human interaction, and support. The other iteration explored displaying memory, generational history, and preservation. We developed this technique of vacuum forming discarded garments within these forms of cladding which could then form multi-purpose chairs, walls, hammocks, beds, and tables. The visual presence of garments within each of the pieces offers a constant reminder of what has been used (worn) and how it has been reused. Savvas and I are currently in the process of exploring how we can start producing PINCH chairs to sell in the coming months. <img width="1266" height="951" width_o="1266" height_o="951" https://shantibell.com/Bridgerton Bridgerton, Contemporary Regency Dresses Netflix Bridgerton X British Fashion Council X Shanti Bell, 2021 This project explores a reinterpretation of Regency-style garments with a contemporary twist. I was asked to design and make two dresses along with accessories, shoes, and mascarade-style masks for two of the main characters in the upcoming Netflix period drama, Bridgerton. The dresses were designed for Phoebe Dynevor and Claudia Jessie who played sisters within the series. The drama series heavily explored the themes of gossip and so I began my research by looking at how gossip would travel within those times - newspapers. I explored how newspapers were stored, stacked, and transported and took direct inspiration of how I could then drape and layer the dresses and fabric. Working with silk, chiffon I wanted to create sculptural gowns which had a contemporary presence and silhouette but echoed the past. Aches &amp; Blues, this is a collaborative project working with the record label 4AD and the artist Chris Bigg. We designed and created the album artwork to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the record label. Over the period of 6 months, we generated a visual concept with the starting place being imagery from my BA final collection. Together, we developed a series of 4 digital album covers, a physical vinyl record cover, and a series of short film clips which accompanied each track. Bell https://shantibell.com/BA-Collection The Weight of Masculinity Central Saint Martins BA Final Collection, 2020 This collection was created within the final year of my BA at Central Saint Martins where I studied Fashion: Print. Masculinity within society is something I have always been intrigued by. In many family structures young males have to adopt the role of the man from an early age. Within my own family growing up, this was apparent with my brother. The pressures he felt to be a man in situations and how he felt he had to adopt this role is what made me want to further explore this within my work. Society places heavy expectations on young men of the rigid ideas of what masculinity is, but something I am keen to visually explore is to display a more delicate, gentle side of masculinity. Chairs carry the literal weight of people, this is shared with ideas about what young males do for their family structures. Chairs are something we as humans have designed to carry our physical weight and so we can take the weight off our feet. My collection is to visually display the weight, burden and pressures that young men have to carry, through objects we as a society have invented to carry our weight. The weight and burden inspiration will also reach into researching bag design and how different cultures globally carry weight and burden. The materiality of wood speaks of the strength young men display, but in the form I am developing it in, it has a fragile fluidity. It has distinctly progressed from being chair structures to sculptures that echo at chair forms.
